WHAT is FOLK ART???

Folk Art is often referred to as self taught art or OUTSIDER ART and it usually includes paintings, sculptures, collages, Southern Folk Pottery such as mean looking jugs with faces, paintings on wood, paper or other found objects. The scope of what folk artists paint or draw on is endless.

Painters of folk art...like Julie...often paint because they are driven by some strong inside force to capture memories on canvas or other surface...a need for expression.

FOLK ART is...

Personal...

It is sometimes religiously inspired...by visions or images...perhaps even dreams. Baptisms, angels, Jesus, heavenly choirs etc. often show up in these types of paintings. This type of art is often called "Visionary Art."

It can be crude, almost animal like in effect producing strong emotions in the onlooker...

And self taught artists usually don't seek out the art world, rather the art world seeks them out. Many have been discovered by patrons who driving down some back road on a spring day, have found folk artists busy at their crafts in their front yards, hanging out paintings in front of trailer houses, sculpting away using metal and old found parts, wheels, whirl-a-gigs, cogs, wheels, etc. These are untrained people who find joy in just "creating!"
